Though all 11 graphical interfaces are included, most users will probably install KDE 2.1.1, Gnome 1.4 or both--KDE is the default interface if multiple interfaces are installed. For those who need even more reliability than the ext2 file system Mandrake Linux 8.0 includes the ReiserFS journaling file system. Although slightly slower than ext2, it's rock solid and unperturbed by power cuts. The PowerPack Edition emphasises server software to a greater extent than the Standard Edition, though the basic server software is the same in all editions. The main difference is users are assumed to have a higher level of Linux configuration skills. While the PowerPack Edition provides little more functionality than the Standard Edition it will mainly appeal to completists who feel a need to have every Linux program or who need more support. --Steve Patient This PowerPack Edition of Mandrake Linux 8.0 is aimed at power users. It has the same excellent DrakX-based installation, with automatic hardware detection, as the Standard Edition but comes with a lot more software--2,300 packages in all on seven CDs. As with all the new editions of Mandrake Linux 8.0, MandrakeSoft is emphasising Linux' multimedia capabilities with support for MP3 managers, digital camera support, 3-D and animation software, video support and lots of games. Its USB and Firewire support is also improved and, for PDA users, Palm connectivity is built in. With PowerPack Edition you get 60 days e-mail support and 30 days telephone support.
